Aggregation
NEW project.
Ag.gre.ga.tion
[ag-ri-gey-shuhn]
-noun
1- a group or mass of distinct or varied things, persons, etc.
2- collection into an unorganized whole
3- the state of being so collected
The Aggregation project started with an attempt to create a single piece of work constructed by compiling the individual efforts of each participant from a large group onto a single canvas. When initially approached to create this piece I was asked to design a work of art that not only beautified its habitat, but also displayed the essence of community found within the establishment. The canvas, being representational of the establishment, allows each mark made upon it to be a symbol of the establishments inhabitants, aiding the visual depiction that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
Much like any functioning community, each member was asked to establish their existence within the whole by making a single mark upon the canvas. Each mark was made given the basic rules: a single black line, representing the individual, traveling in a vertical direction, anywhere on the canvas. Loose instructions were given to each participant, inclusive of potential placement and how tos from the lead artist.
As the lead artist for this project my job was to make sense of these lines and create the piece in its entirety. The choice to create a forest was made previous to starting the project. Symbolically, the forest allowed each member to be represented as a single tree, rooted in its habitat, growing within the community, and blossoming individually, as a result of its surroundings. Allowing each member to place themselves within the over all composition, contributes to the individual sense of inclusion within the actual establishment.
It is my hope that each piece within the Aggregation series allows the participants of the whole to feel a sense of creative inclusion, accomplishment, and acceptance, not only within the confines of the canvas, but within the social network they have chosen to include themselves within.
The Aggregation project is a great way to create a visual depiction of community or inclusion in regards to family, friends, and business.
